Those who don’t mind a longer drive from Marrakech to Merzouga will be rewarded with some of Morocco’s most dramatic scenery along the way.
Just outside Marrakech, you’ll begin crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where winding roads reveal panoramic views of mountain peaks and traditional Berber villages. This region is especially beautiful in spring and autumn.
Several hours later, you’ll reach the town of Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco,” home to famous film studios and historic kasbahs. Continuing east, you’ll pass through the Dades Valley or the Valley of Roses, depending on your route, where lush oases contrast with rugged canyon landscapes.
Further along, the journey takes you through the Ziz Valley, known for its vast palm groves and dramatic cliffs. Shortly after, you’ll arrive in Errachidia before continuing on to Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi mark the edge of the Sahara Desert.
